A1(M) Breakdown Safety – What To Do If You Break Down

The A1(M) carries high-speed traffic, including HGVs, vans, commuters and long-distance vehicles. If you break down on the A1(M), safety must come first. Try to leave the motorway at the nearest safe exit if your vehicle is still moving. If you cannot leave the motorway, move as far left as possible, switch on your hazard lights and keep passengers away from live traffic where it is safe to do so.

Sign 1: Move To A Safe Place If Possible

If your vehicle can still move, leave the A1(M) at the nearest junction, services, lay-by or safe stopping point. Avoid stopping in a live lane unless the vehicle cannot move.

Sign 2: Use Hazard Lights And Keep Clear Of Traffic

Switch on hazard lights immediately. If it is safe to exit, leave by the nearside door and move behind a barrier or away from traffic. If you cannot exit safely, stay inside with your seatbelt on and call emergency services.

Sign 3: Send Exact Location For Fast A1(M) Recovery

Send your nearest A1(M) junction, northbound or southbound direction, road marker number if available, nearby services, postcode if close, Google Maps pin or what3words location. A clear location helps recovery drivers reach you faster.

Sign 4: Confirm Vehicle Condition

Tell the driver if your car starts, rolls, goes into neutral, has locked wheels, has accident damage, has a flat tyre, has no keys, or needs skates. Correct details help the right recovery truck attend and reduce loading delays.

Important Recovery Loading Advice For A1(M) Drivers

If you break down in a lay-by, service area, slip road or safe stopping area on the A1(M), try to leave a clear gap behind your vehicle where possible. A flatbed recovery truck usually needs space behind the broken down vehicle to stop, lower the ramps and line up safely for loading.

When possible, try to park further forward in the lay-by or safe stopping area and leave enough room behind your vehicle for the recovery truck. Flatbed recovery operators need space to stop, lower the ramps and safely winch the vehicle onto the truck bed.
